Some wonderfully sad Swedish pop, made cheerful by twinkling percussion and a gorgeous melody
The glistening, slightly woozy-sounding What Have I Become? is the closing track on Swedish miserablist Loney Dear's sixth studio album, Hall Music. While Loney Dear is a mainly solo affair, being the pseudonym for multi-instrumentalist Emil Svanngen, What Have I Become? features lead vocals from long-term collaborator Malin Sthlberg, her soft, studied voice giving the lyric "and now I really don't care at all" an extra layer of shoulder-shrugging self-pity. While the lyrics aren't exactly upbeat, the music Svanngen builds behind them is a beautiful swell of twinkling percussion, soaring strings and burbling drums, adding a dash of light to the gloom.
