New music: Girls ? Vomit

Take a trip through the seedy side of town in this exclusive premiere of the new Girls video

When San Francisco's Girls ? built around core members Christopher Owens and Chet "JR" White ? emerged in 2009 much of the focus was on Owens's incredible backstory, which involved the Children of God cult, homelessness and a millionaire benefactor. Happily, their debut album, thoughtfully called Album, was pretty great too. Owens wrote candidly about his past, while White added touches of Elvis Costello, the Beach Boys and Ariel Pink (whose band, Holy Shit, Owens used to be in). Last year they released the six-track EP Broken Dreams Club, a bruised collection of songs that flitted between genres and revealed a more polished sound.

Vomit is the first single to be taken from their forthcoming second album, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, and at nearly seven minutes long is a sprawling, slow-burn freakout. As Owens sighs his way through the lyrics ("Nights I spend alone, I spend them running around looking for you baby"), the band throw in crunching, psych-rock guitar solos, warm organ fills and, towards the end, gospel backing vocals. In the video ? an exclusive premiere for guardian.co.uk/music ? we are introduced to a red Ford Mustang, which then takes us on a tour of the seedy side of town, before Owens is finally revealed to be the driver as he turns up at White's house, a smile breaking across his face. It's a hypnotic road trip that, like the song itself, has delusions of grandeur but works best as a simple tale about trying to find someone who makes you happy.

? Father, Son, Holy Ghost is out via Fantasytrashcan/Turnstile on 12 September
