Making for the closest race in months, "The Smurfs" and "Cowboys & Aliens" are neck-in-neck when it comes to box office earnings over the weekend of July 28-30, 2011.
The Neil Patrick Harris/ Sofia Vergara fronted "Smurfs" film garnered approximately $13 million on Friday while trending towards a total of $40 million on its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde's sci-fi/thriller "Cowboys & Aliens" has exactly the same numbers thus far, making #13 million on opening day en route to an estimated $40 million weekend.
Rounding out the top five at the box office are the Chris Evans spearheaded "Captain America: The First Avenger" ($25 million), followed by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" ($22 million) and "Crazy, Stupid, Love" ($20 million).
