Mrs Richie is eight months pregnant with a baby girl but the soap actor has kept the news quiet until now owing to the controversial EastEnders cot death plot.
Scenes in which Ronnie Mitchell swapped her dead son with Kat and Alfie's little boy saw complaints flooding into the BBC.
Shane explained to Hello! magazine: "People see me as Alfie Moon. They would keep asking me about the cot death storyline and it would have felt strange tagging on the end, 'Oh, and by the way, we're expecting a baby'.
"If people asked about Christie, I said she'd put on a bit of weight."
The 47-year-old added that he avoided watching the storyline on TV but said it had been "handled brilliantly".
He will soon become a father for the fifth time having had two sons from his marriage to Coleen Nolan.
