CZJ released a statement to confirm the news after US tabloid the National Enquirer reported that she had checked into a mental health facility.
Asked about Catherine's battle with bipolar II in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Douglas said: "She was outed."
But the Wall Street star insisted he was proud of his wife, saying: "It takes a lot of courage to seek help and I am proud of Catherine for doing something positive about her situation."
CZJ is now back at work and putting a positive spin on her media "outing". She told People magazine: "There is no shame in seeking help.
"This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them. If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it."
Despite their respective problems, Douglas told Oprah: "It's onwards and upwards for us."
We wish them both well.
