The first round of MTV's Musical March Madness 2011 tournament is in the books, and, unlike the actual NCAA bracket, ours has been relatively free of upsets so far. In fact, about the closest thing we've got to a VCU is Sum 41, who shocked the world by knocking off #1 seed Arcade Fire in the battle of Canada.

Check out our updated MMM Bracket right here!

There were, of course, other eye-opening results: #11 Adele nipping #6 Kid Rock, #12 Patrick Stump getting by #5 Neon Trees (who couldn't muster the bluster of Gene Hackman to advance), and #9 Disturbed ripping #8 Dave Matthews Band. But overall, the first round played out about how you would expect it. And while that may have been a bummer for fans of underdogs, it's also a great thing for the tournament, because with the lesser bands tossed to the wayside, what we're left with is a bracket positively loaded with talent. Let's take a look, region-by-region.

Second-round voting begins Tuesday over on the Newsroom blog.

Midwest

The top-seeded Foo Fighters cruised past #16 the Damned Things, #2 the Black Keys wiped the floor with #15 Bret Michaels, #3 Vampire Weekend got by #14 Bright Eyes ... in short, the higher-ranked bands did quite well in the first round. In fact, aside from Disturbed's and Patrick Stump's wins, about the only shocking result to come out of the Midwest was #4 Rise Against knocking off #13 Pete Wentz (and Black Cards), whom many had circled as a potential dark horse favorite. Oh, and defending champs Coheed and Cambria also had a strong showing, only further cementing their cause to repeat. Here are our second-round matchups.

#1 Foo Fighters vs. #9 Disturbed
#12 Patrick Stump vs. #4 Rise Against
#6 Coheed and Cambria vs. #3 Vampire Weekend
#7 Avenged Sevenfold vs. #2 The Black Keys

Voting in the Midwest Region tips off Tuesday over on the Newsroom blog.

West

Another region that saw the favorites do very well: #1 30 Seconds to Mars ripped (very game) #16 Yellowcard, #2 Blink-182 took care of business against #15 All Time Low (despite some rather spirited trash talk from the ATL guys), #3 Green Day overcame #14 Adam Lambert, etc. In fact, there wasn't a higher-seeded team that lost in the West, which makes the second-round a defacto "Bracket of Death." Here's a look:

#1 30 Seconds to Mars vs. #8 Pearl Jam
#5 Panic at the Disco vs. #4 Florence & the Machine
#6 U2 vs. #3 Green Day
#7 Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. #2 Blink-182

Voting in the West Region starts Wednesday over on the Newsroom blog.

South

Once again, the big boys took care of business: #1 Linkin Park smothered #16 Sleigh Bells, #2 Muse murdered #15 Cobra Starship, #5 Paramore rallied late to knock off #12 No Doubt. But there were some upsets in the South. #14 Tokio Hotel held off a game #2 Mumford & Sons, and #11 Adele slipped by #6 Kid Rock. In the second-round, we're left with a bracket that's loaded with blockbuster matchups (the Paramore/ Kings of Leon tilt should be a barn-burner), with only four bands advancing to the Sweet 16. Here's where we stand in round #2:

#1 Linkin Park vs. #8 R.E.M.
#5 Paramore vs. #4 Kings of Leon
#11 Adele vs. #14 Tokio Hotel
#7 Weezer vs. #2 Muse

Voting in the South Region begins Thursday over on the Newsroom blog.

East

Things didn't quite pan out the way the experts had predicted in the East, as #16 Sum 41 throttled #1 Arcade Fire -- the kind of upset that just never happens in the NCAAs (seriously, it has never happened), and #11 Rage Against The Machine took down #6 Cage the Elephant. Those shockers set up some potentially thrilling second-round matchups (Rage/ My Chem should be a classic), and the guys in Sum face another tough challenge in Coldplay. Here's a look:

#15 Sum 41 vs. #8 Coldplay
#5 Phoenix vs. #4 the Strokes
#11 Rage Against the Machine vs. #3 My Chemical Romance
#7 Owl City vs. #2 Radiohead

Voting in the East Region launches Friday over on the Newsroom blog.

MTV's Musical March Madness moves on to the second round! Voting begins Tuesday and continues until Sunday, at which point we'll move on to the Sweet 16. All winners are determined by your votes, so if your favorite act is still in the tournament, it's be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM -- but get ready, things only get tougher from here on out!
