Elizabeth Taylor's Long Time Crib Officially Listed

Last week Your Mama briefly mentioned that recently deceased Dame Elizabeth Taylor's long-time Los Angeles mansion?in a particularly posh section of Bel Air?had been hoisted on the market with an asking price of $8,600,000.

At that time an interweb listing for the approximately 7,000 square foot two-story ranch was not available. Now it is.

Listing information for the 1.27 acre estate reveals that the gated driveway sweeps past a guard house?manned by Israeli security personnel according to an article in the June 2011 issue of Vanity Fair?to a stone-paved motor court where, in one of the listing photos, the late Miz Taylor's big ol' Maybach can be see parked in front of the front-facing garage.

Inside the large but architecturally modest mansion violet-eyed Miz Taylor lived in cozy but billionaire-style splendor surrounded by antique Aubusson rugs, a lifetime of showbiz memorabilia and a blue chip art collection that includes works by impressionist mac-daddies like Van Gogh, Modigliani, Pissarro and Manet. Miz Taylor's family?a hodgepodge quartet of children from three of her seven husbands, 10 grandchildren and a handful of great-grandchildren?oft gathered for holidays and family events at the sprawling manse that includes a living room with fireplace and beamed ceiling, dining room, and additional sitting room, a galley-style country kitchen and home office converted from what was once a screening room.

There are two family bedrooms with garden access on the main floor, plus a master suite and staff quarters. The second floor has two more smaller family bedrooms plus Miz Taylor's private boo-dwar, comprised of bedroom with sitting area wrapped in lavender fabric, a private bathroom and an adjacent dressing room/beauty salon where Miz Taylor's devoted cadre of mostly gay minions would do her up pretty for her increasingly rare public appearances and occasional trips to gay watering holes like The Abbey in West Hollywood.

The perfectly groomed grounds and terraced gardens include a sparkly mosaic tile-lined swimming pool, small greenhouse for orchid cultivation, rose gardens, more gardens filled with gardenias, lilies of the valley and birds of paradise, a koi pod with waterfall and a secret bamboo jungle.

Lily Allen: 'I still want to be famous'

Filed under:

PA

When Lily Allen announced she was giving up music last year we all assumed it was because of the pressures of fame, after all - she can be a bit temperamental.

But we were wrong! And she's admitted in a new interview that she actually quite likes being famous - she just couldn't get very excited about music any more.
Speaking to the Sunday Times Style magazine, she claimed that she also wanted to spend more time with fiancé Sam Cooper.

She said: "That's why I made that decision. It was never about... I feel disgusting talking about this, because it's like, I still want to be famous, I just don't want to sing.

"I knew I had to do something else, because I'm not wealthy enough not to work for the rest of my life. You don't get paid to be in magazines and I'm accustomed to living in a certain way. I like having my nice house and filling it with nice things.

"I'd like to be in that position for the rest of my life, so obviously I'm going to have to work."

Erm, can somebody check that this was the real Lily Allen and not Paris Hilton in disguise please?

One of the perks of beign famous is that you might get personal cookery lessons from Gordon Ramsay. Or is that a disadvantage?

What do you think? Are you surprised or is Lily just being honest? Comment below...

Daytime Drama Stud Peter Reckell Re-Lists Swank Eco-Crib

SELLER: Peter Reckell an Kelly Moneymaker
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
PRICE: $4,990,000
SIZE: 3,445 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Frankly, children, we'd rather bathe in pig snot and jump into a vat of glass shards up than watch any of those daytime dramas that bedevil the boob toob but that doesn't keep us from an honest to goodness respect for the tenacity and fortitude of all the hard-working soap story denizens. They may not always be the best actors in Tinseltown but they are undoubtedly the beavers of the entertainment industry who churn out show after show, day after day, week after week, year after year. Sitcom stars, bless their pampered hearts, get a whole week to prepare and rehearse but soapers get a new script every damn day.

Even non-soap opera watchers like Your Mama know a thing or two about the daytime dramas. We know that always-a-bridesmaid-never-a-bride Susan Lucci no longer has a job and we know that one of the longest running soaps is The Days of our Lives. For about the last 10,000 years one of the primary story lines on The Day of Our Lives was the saga of the romantic perils and triumphs between a gal named Hope and man named Bo, played by the bearded beau-hunky and hairy-chested soap stud Peter Reckell.

Mister Reckell and his Missus, singer/songwriter Kelly Moneymaker of Expos fame, have a serious thing for the green. It's been reported elsewhere that he drives an electric car and often bikes many miles to and from work. He and the Missus have one child and have publicly stated they will sire just one biological child due to justifiable concerns about over population of the earth.

In early 2003 Mister Reckell and Miz Moneymaker paid $1,140,000 for a Los Angeles, CA property at the tail end of a cul-de-sac promontory high in the mountains between Brentwood and Encino. The couple reportedly had the existing house taken apart and shipped to Mexico where it was utilized in some way or another by Habitat for Humanity. Listen cinnamon sticks, we believe the Reckell-Moneymaker's globe-hearting hearts are sincere and we think Habitat for Humanity is an amazing organization but we're can't fathom why the Reckell-Moneymakers and/or the peeps at Habitat for Humanity opted for the hassle, expense and significant resources required to ship the house all the way to Mexico when surely there was a need for a house in the Los Angeles area.

Strange that, perhaps, but anyhoo, the well-heeled tree huggers replaced the old house with a brand new, high-minded, Asian-infused, eco-chic residence outfitted with every luxury and chock-full of up-to-date eco-friendly materials and technologies. Marketing materials for the property show the house includes e-glass windows with mechanical shades for automatic modulation of heat loss and gain, certified sustainable bamboo floors and cabinets, a high-tech security system with high-def/low-profile cameras, a grey water system, recycled terrazzo flooring with radiant heat, formaldehyde-free MDF cabinets?breathe, breathe, breathe?recycled denim insulation, roof-mounted photovoltaic system, rain chains and French drains and even an air purge system to rid the attached two car garage of auto exhaust fumes. Yes, hunnies, this is a luxury loving eco-warrior's real estate wet dream.

The Los Angeles County Tax Man shows the thoughtful two story residence measures 3,445 square feet and listing information indicates there are a total of four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Mister Reckell and Miz Moneymaker first put their eco-contemporary crib on the market in April 2010 with an asking price of $6,499,000. The price tag has since fallen precipitously to its current $4,990,000.

A walled, gated and xeriscaped courtyard with koi pond creates a tranquil transition from the street to the entrance hall where a sheet of water drips meditatively down one of the walls and the koi pond in the courtyard extends deep into the house under a walkable glass floor.

The entrance hall leads to the entertaining and dining area with (gas) fireplace, hemp chandelier and two-walls of floor-to-ceiling sliding windows that eliminate the visual distinction between indoors and out. The sleek but organic and psychologically warm gourmet kitchen has top-grade appliances, a center island with concrete counter top and trough-style sink, a sterile stainless steel counter top and back splash on either side of the Wolf brand range and a wall of meticulously milled bamboo cabinetry. A built-in pizza oven has a shiny stainless steel orifice and a spacious walk-in pantry with full-sized Sub-Zero freezer was built with formaldehyde free material.

In addition to a gas fireplace with stone accents and a bamboo entertainment cabinet with DVD drawers, the high-tech media room thrills audio- and videophiles with surround sound, 64-inch high-def television, iPod dock, a monster power amp and customized remote control that works all the gadgets and gewgaws. A glass bridge connects the media room to a rooftop herb garden. Your Mama loves an herb garden but, honestly, we're lazy and it seems like a lot of effort to climb a bunch of stairs and navigate a transparent bridge just to get a damn leaf of basil or sprig of rosemary.

The Reckell-Moneymakers, who clearly have a decorative affinity for all all things carved, antique and Asian, have lined the walls of their walk-in wine cave with booze racks and fashioned an unusual and not entirely sensible wine tasting banquette from a carved antique Chinese lounge-thing. The house was custom-designed for a musician?that would be Miz Moneymaker?and includes a recording studio with engineering room and recording booth built for optimal sound-proofing with a floating floor, recycled denim and organic cotton insulation and hemp wall panels.

The large but not extravagantly-sized dwelling contains two family bedrooms, a guest suite with murphy bed and built-in bamboo cabinets and a cushy master suite where a 17th-century East Indian temple was structurally incorporated to frame the sliding glass doors that open to a private terrace with hot tub and rugged view of the Santa Monica Mountains. Just because the home's inhabitants are fiercely committed enviro-protecting types does not mean they're the stereotypical Birkenstock-wearing chain-themselves-to a tree in a dirty tie-dyed smock outfit sort of hippies. No sir, this house is for the deep-pocketed earth-mommas and daddies with compost heaps who a drive a late model Prius to $5,000 a plate save-the-environment charity dinners on a semi-regular basis.

As such, the master suite offers its enviro-protecting inhabitants dual walk-in closets with boutique-like displays for shoes and accessories crafted with formaldehyde free materials, and a recycled glass tile lined bathroom with trough sink that sits on a floating bamboo cabinet, party-sized shower with steam and a Japanese-style soaking tub with river rock tile floor. The Reckell-Moneymakers and their team of smart architects wisely installed a laundry chute in the master bedroom, an oft overlooked convenience with which Your Mama wishes our own house was blessed.

The mostly flat back yard?which has a surprising and suspicious-looking amount of very green lawn presumably watered via the grey water system?includes a variety of terraces and an ipe wood deck that hides a rainwater storage tank. An ozone-filtered and glass tile-lined swimming pool heated by a one-of-a-kind fence fashioned from eco-resin and solar panels is fitted with an electronic child- and pet-saving pool cover that can be walked upon. Somewhere back there is a meditation fountain where water gurgles magically up through a salt-block pillar, whatever that is. The eco-couple's near fetish for carved antique Asian things takes flight in the backyard where they've installed a 16th-century East Indian temple with a living roof and use as a spiritually-minded entertainment pavilion with divine and dramatic views from downtown to the Pacific Ocean.

Your Mama has no idea why the Reckell-Moneymakers want to sell their obviously costly and much labored over environmentally sensitive home but whatever the reason(s) we imagine they'll next park their electric car and put up their hemp-sandaled feet in an equally progressive piece of eco-chic architecture.

Now children, before y'all start to pick this beehawtch apart like it was a piece of pork to be pulled, try to remember that a hyper self-conscious and overtly p.c. residence like this, no matter what you think of its contemporary architecture and design, is a far superior residential structure to erect to withstand inevitable future energy deprivations than all those steroidal pseudo-Tuscan and quasi-Mediterranean mcmansions that so many wealthy people in southern California seem to prefer and build. Just a thought.

Professional Pigskin Passer Troy Aikman Puts Dallas Pad Up For Sale

SELLER: Troy Aikman
LOCATION: Dallas, TX
PRICE: $24,000,000
SIZE: 10,520 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 6 full and 2 half bathrooms

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: Listen chickens, Your Mama knows as much about football as former child actress Lindsay Lohan knows about keeping the po-po out of her business so when we first heard from our Lonestar State-based real estate gossip pal Candy Evans that some Cowboy named Troy Aikmen put his hoity-toity house in Dallas's uppity and gorgeous Highland Park 'hood on the market we said, "Who?"

Natch, we took to the interweb and within minutes discovered California-born Mister Aikman passed the professional pigskin for 12 long seasons in Dallas, led his Cowboys to three Super Bowl wins and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He was, it seems and without question, a beloved football force to be reckoned with.

Since retiring in 2000, Mister Aikman has operated as a color commentator for Fox sports programs, hosts a weekly radio show and is a part-owner of the San Diego Padres, whoever they are. About the time he hung up his cleats and uniform he married the Cowboys' publicist Rhonda Worthey and the newlyweds quickly popped out two daughters to add to the one Miz Worthey already had from a previous betrothal.

Alas, as all good things often come to an end, earlier in the year the Aikmans announced they are headed for the court of divorce. Divorce amongst the rich and famous often demands the liquidation of assets and the sale of posh properties so it's really no surprise to real estate watchers that the parting pair recently heaved their marital mansion on the market this week with an asking price of $24,000,000. It's believed by those in the Dallas real estate know that the Aikman's chunky 10,520 square foot Mediterranean crib is the most expensive private residence currently on the market in the Dallas Metro area.

Mister and Missus Aikman acquired the first parcel of their two-lot compound in April of 2004. A few minutes research did not turn up a sale price but public records Your Mama peeped show the purchase price was high enough they took a seven million dollar mortgage on the property. According to Our Miss Candy?who pens the Second Shelters blog?Mister Aikman "sweet talked" the previous owner into selling him her home. No doubt much to her chagrin, shortly after buying the .54 acre property Mister Aikman and the Missus razed the house and replaced it with the mansion that now stands stately on the corner lot.

Listing information indicates the staunch and regal residence contains 5 bedrooms, 6 full and 2 (or maybe 3) half bathrooms, three living areas including a nearly 800 square foot family room on the finished basement level, a dining room with fireplace, study with coffered ceiling and a main floor family room with fireplace, hand-hewn beamed ceiling and triple-glazed glass doors that open to one of the home's several terraces.

A mosaic tile-lined swimming pool sits in a courtyard setting with the main house on one side and a guest house/pool pavilion with fireplace and outdoor grill station with pizza oven on the other. The two structures are linked by a columned loggia and a sturdy and voluminous dining gazebo.

At the tail end of 2008 Mister and Missus Aikman coughed up an unknown amount of additional funds for the .9 acre property next door, which they bought from a well-known but scandalized property developer recently sentenced to 14 months in prison for bribing a city official. As with their previous purchase the Aikmans demolished the existing 7,411 square foot manse to make way for more grand grounds that now include a second circular drive, flat expanses of unnaturally green grass, manicured flower beds shaded by mature trees, a fenced sport court, sunken trampoline and a guest house.

Over the years the Aikmans have owned a fair number of investment properties in places like Irving and Roanoke, TX. Hopefully they've done better with their investment properties than they have with some of their personal properties. In September 2002 they sold a .42 acre vacant residential parcel behind the gates of the Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert, CA for $1,500,000, $195,000 less than they paid for the property just two years prior. In November 2007 Mister Aikman sold a 10,971 square foot mansion with 6 bedrooms and 7 full and 3 half bathrooms in Plano, TX for $1,330,000, a painful to the pocketbook $665,000 less than he paid for the property in May 1996.

Property records show that Mister Aikman still owns a 4,134 square foot house at the tail end of a quiet cul-de-sac, just a few miles from the Dallas/Forth Worth International Airportwith 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms in suburban Coppell, TX that he purchased in September 1997 for $383,904.

Interestingly and somewhat inexplicably, word on the real estate street in Dallas, according to Our Miss Candy, is that Mister Aikman has expressed interest in?but not yet made an offer on?a slightly more modest and more manageable property next door to the one he's trying to sell. Such are the weird real estate ways of the rich and famous.

Gil Scott-Heron: share your memories

There's something especially heartbreaking about the passing of the godfather of rap

There's perhaps something especially heartbreaking about the passing of Gil Scott-Heron now when, after years of drug problems and jail spells, his career had been put back on track thanks to I'm New Here, his stunning collaboration with XL Recordings boss Richard Russell. In fact, Gil was only just back from touring Europe when years of bad living finally caught up with him.

Still, at least the man whose influence on the music world is immeasurable (especially that of hip hop, rap and neo soul) had one final chance to remind a new generation that his was a voice like no other.

Who could possibly claim to hear On Coming From A Broken Home, the opening track on I'm New Here, without their body freezing on the spot as that voice cut its way towards what Gil himself described as "the absolute marrow" of your bones?

Even without paying attention to the lyrics ? a moving tribute to the female figures that shaped his, or any man's, life ? Gil's voice was as devastating an instrument as you're likely to ever hear. Rather than showing signs of damage after all those years of abuse, it seemed to have aged instead like the finest cask of rye. The album looked away from the swing of Gil's early jazz and soul-tinged releases towards a more skittish, trip hop backdrop, but that didn't mean the record lacked soul. After all, Gil's voice was soul.

You could gauge the vast influence of Gil Scott-Heron without even having to listen to a note of his music. When LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy starts rattling through his list of the most important, underrated figures in music on Losing My Edge (a list that stretches from This Heat to the Sonics) only one figure is worthy of the full on exclamation treatment: "Gil! Scott! Heron!"

Gil will be remembered most, of course, for The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, the 1970 spoken word track still regarded as one of the greatest pieces of political music ever put to tape.

You will doubtless hear more about that, along with other tributes to Gil, on guardian.co.uk/music over the coming days (Richard Russell has already blogged about the last time he spoke to Gil), but for now we'd love for you to share your memories of how this most unique musical voice moved you?

Why Adam Ant is not the first pop star who likes to be beside the seaside

Adam Ant's decision to tour Britain's coastal towns marks a welcome revival of a historic pop tradition

In June, Adam Ant will embark on a five-date tour of seaside towns ? and revive a long lost tradition in the process. As an astute observer of pop culture, the Antman must know that British coastal towns provide the quintessential homegrown music experience, what with the fading Victoriana and the licence for blustery fun and ? even better ? anarchy.

The big cities might think they're at the cutting edge, but it's the seaside where British pop first thrived ? from postwar gigs to seaside brawls between mods and rockers. The mix of showbiz, cheap pills and even cheaper thrills combined to forge an English pop vision far more vivid than that created by art schools.

Growing up in Blackpool, I felt cut off from the epicentre of pop action. But if I had been a teenager in the 60s I could have seen endless Beatles gigs, watched Jethro Tull, or witness Jimi Hendrix set fire to his guitar on stage (one of only two occasions this actually happened).

The 60s was the last decade that Blackpool could be considered the second city of showbiz; even Frank Sinatra would think nothing of playing there. A few decades earlier, George Formby, the UK's biggest homegrown star, would happily live in Blackpool and perform there for months on end. He even recorded songs about the place, such as the lascivious and censor-baffling Little Stick of Blackpool Rock.

Back then, seaside towns captivated the public imagination. The Beatles would dress up for pantomime pictures on the beach in Margate and play residencies in coastal townssuch as Bournemouth. It was a huge part of the pop conveyer belt and probably a cheap thrill in the days before LSD and touring America. The Beatles never left behind the inspiration of the seaside, though. Paul McCartney is believed to have thought up Magical Mystery Tour while looking at one of Blackpool's illumination trams.

Unfortunately, by the time the Specials fell apart on their own seaside tour, the tradition was dying along with the towns themselves. Perhaps they were too old fashioned for the amphetamine-driven cynicism of the era. Morrissey, of course, wrote one of his best songs, Everyday Is Like Sunday, about a visit to Borth in Wales.

Since then, Brighton has become a hip enclave and Blackpool has bravely soldiered on as a piss-up paradise. Elsewhere, other seaside towns have become fascinating curios ignored by the showbiz and entertainment culture that was once part of their DNA. Maybe Adam Ant's jaunt will revive this tradition and more artists will feel the need to be beside the seaside.
